What macOS version do I need?
macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later, on Apple Silicon or Intel. SottoType ships as a notarized DMG.
Do I need an OpenAI API key?
Only if you want the lowest-latency cloud mode. Offline mode runs entirely on your Mac with Apple Speech and a small local model — no API key needed, free forever.
Will my audio be uploaded?
Audio leaves your Mac only if you choose cloud mode and have configured an OpenAI key. In that case, audio goes directly from your Mac to OpenAI — never to our servers. In offline mode, no audio leaves your Mac.
Does it work in Chinese / Japanese / Korean?
Yes. Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), English, Japanese, and Korean are supported.
What's the difference between SottoType and macOS dictation?
Built-in macOS dictation transcribes speech literally. SottoType cleans up filler words, fixes punctuation, and applies an action (translate, formalize, etc.) when you use SottoKey. It also injects directly without going through the clipboard.
How is SottoKey different from SottoType?
SottoType is the app. SottoKey is your custom voice shortcut — the key you hold to dictate. Pro users can configure custom action templates that run when SottoKey is pressed.
Will it work on Windows or iOS?
Not yet. SottoType is Mac-only at launch. We use Mac-specific APIs (Accessibility, AVAudioEngine, Apple Speech) that don't have cross-platform equivalents.

What happens after the 1 year of updates?
Your Pro license keeps working forever. After the first year, you can choose to renew for continued updates or stay on the version you have.
